Very very sad news – we lost Mitch Jayne of the Dillards (1928 – 2010).

Quoted from an interview on cmt.com, Elton John says Wheatstraw Suite is one of my favorite albums. It was mostly Beatles songs, and the first thing I did when I came to America was go and see them. The Dillards opened for Elton John’s first American tour.  Mitch’s droll, whimsical narrative background for The Dillards was a main ingredient in their popularity. The Dillards are credited with being the originators of country rock. Please see the many obituary articles about this incredible man put in Mitch Jayne at google.com. He will be so very, very sadly missed forever. His now widely recorded bluegrass standard lyrics include Dooley, Old Home Place, There is a Time and many, many more.

The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers and The Dillards, the influential band from Salem, Missouri known for their popular appearances on The Andy Griffith Show as The Darlins. The Dillards blazed a trail in the 1960s West Coast music scene for progressive bluegrass bands. The Dillards were a driving force in modernizing and popularizing the sound of bluegrass in the 1960s and 70s. Their later innovative albums Wheatstraw Suite and Copperfields are a forerunners of the 70s country rock sound of many artists like Poco, The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers and more.
